Majordomo 1.93

Section-Update: 1 Sep 1995

Majordomo may be the most popular package in terms of the number of sites running it (though no real statistics are available, of course). Why? Aside from the general explosion in mailing lists, Majordomo has the advantages of being free, of a manageable size and complexity, and written in Perl, a language many feel comfortable with. Whatever extension you want for Majordomo, it's likely that someone has written it or is in the process of doing so. However, centralized development of Majordomo has been slow for the past year or so, and the current system has a few vexing bugs as well as real performance problems when it runs on very busy systems. So, be warned. The development torch has just been passed to someone who is supposed to have more time for it; it is hoped the more prominent problems with the current version of Majordomo will be addressed soon.

System requirements
Majordomo requires a Unix system with a C compiler and a recent version of Perl. Out of the box, Majordomo assumes you're using Sendmail, but people have made it work with all sorts of MTA's as long as they have a command-line interface. Reportedly, ports of Majordomo are in progress for Windows NT and OS/2, but none is ready for publication at the time of this paragraph's writing.
